The data center graveyard

Projects that were announced and then stopped, and why. 6 are cancelled and 4 are on hold, carrying 1,068 MW of planned IT load that every total on the site leaves out. A further 17 announced or permitting projects have had no dated news for 18 months.

Gone quiet announced or permitting, latest dated news before April 2025

These are not declared dead. No source in the record is dated in the last 18 months, so each one is a project to check.

Why announced projects die

No tenant. Large campuses are financed after an anchor tenant signs. Without one, lenders wait and the sponsor will not build at risk.

No financing. A memorandum and a press release do not raise a loan. Lenders want a tenant, power and permits first.

No power. The utility must commit grid capacity, and queues run for years in several markets. A project announced before its power letter is a plan.

Land or legal terms. A short land-use term, a title problem or a missing permit can make a site unfinanceable even after work starts.

Announcement only. Some projects exist for a share price, a forum's deal tally or a speech. Nothing follows the headline.

Market moved. A rival lands the tenant, rules change or rates rise. The project rarely gets a formal end. It goes quiet.

Each project page shows its build odds: seven public gates, from land to construction, and which ones it has passed. That is the same test in reverse.

* marks a capacity figure whose source states a basis other than IT load. Planned MW is IT load unless marked. Running capacity is rarely published, so a missing figure means undisclosed.
